As many of you know, we've had some difficulty getting a stable meeting
place at HCC in the last few months. Although there is some slim chance
they will allow us to continue to meet there, it's more likely they will
not. This means that we'll have to find a new meeting place for the
Tampa meetings, most likely.
I'd like to bring up another point. From what I know, all the other
people who lead SLUG meetings do so somewhere close to where they live,
or at least close to where they work. Rob runs NPR meetings and lives in
the area. Aaron runs St Pete meetings and lives there. Bill lives in
Brandon and runs the Brandon meetings. Mark runs the Sarasota/Bradenton
meetings and lives in that area, or at least works down there. On the
other hand, I live in New Port Richey and work in Clearwater, but run
both the Dunedin and Tampa meetings.
It's often suggested that we have Tampa meetings at the Tampa library
downtown. The problem here is that I'm not willing to hassle with
driving all the way into downtown Tampa late at night, and fight with
parking just to run meetings down there. Maybe everyone else thinks the
Tampa library is a great idea, and are willing to go down there. It's
just that I'm not.
This is your group, so it's really your choice. If you want to continue
to have Tampa meetings, then someone who lives in Tampa is going to have
to come up with a Tampa location in which to meet (including the
library, if that's what you think is best). That's the first thing.
Until that happens, Tampa meetings are most likely not going to happen.
The second thing is that, unless you find something I consider "close"
in Tampa, you're probably going to need to find someone (not me) to run
those meetings. I'll gladly provide any help or guidance this person
needs. I'm not the only guy or even the best guy to run meetings. I'm
sure there's someone who comes to those meetings who would be capable of
running them. You just have to step up and volunteer.
If something changes with HCC (like they let us meet there) I'll let you
know. Otherwise, until you folks figure out some other place to meet in
Tampa, those meetings are suspended. So get creative. Similarly, someone
needs to step up and volunteer to run Tampa meetings. (Hey, it's not
that bad-- just ask the five guys who originally volunteered to run
meetings in their areas. If they can do it, so can you.)
