After the spate of postings from Smitty and Russ, I finally s*bbed to
the SVLUG list, just to see if it was as bad as all that. I've been on
for a day or two, and I have yet to see a substantive technical
discussion. I see a lot of bitching and sniping, and I see a lot of
politics (industry commentary, etc.). Moen appears to be short and/or
ill-tempered in every post. Finally the president got on and loudly
warned the troublemakers to cease and desist.

One of our guys got on (the guy who runs the Sarasota meetings), took
them to task for such bad manners, and held our list up as a better
example. ;-} (Yes, the bad word scripts have been removed from the SLUG
list.)

I don't wonder that Smitty got reamed on that list. With him and Moen in
the same room together, I'm not sure either one would come out alive.
Smitty likes to poke at ant hills, and Moen seems to have no patience
for anyone who has less knowledge or stature than him.

It's interesting-- even on their website you see this same kind of
"leave me alone!" attitude. One of the pages talks about job offers, and
how they used to allow them but no more because of yada yada yada. I
understand the position they're in, with a huge membership in the
highest technology place on Earth. But it just leaves you with the
impression that the group's been through hell, and they just don't have
time for any foolishness anymore. Kind of like a really big bank, where
you walk in and they just want your money, but don't want to know who
you are.

Anyway, it's too bad. SVLUG ought to be the model LUG. Too many
incidents like the Moen list rants, and you get a soured field. I hope
they recover.

Paul
