use hdparm somewhere in your startup boot script

/sbin/hdparm -m16 -c1 /dev/hda

-c1 will set /dev/hda for 32 bit mode and -m16 will specify multiple
sector transfer. See the man pages for details and be careful with this
one. Misuse can cause severe problems. You can test transfer rates
before and after the changes with /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda

Reiserfs is a file system organization not a drive type. The parameters
set by hdparm are un-related to what file system is used within a
particular partition of a drive.

As for me, it's hard to guage the relative stability of one file system
over another when the OS never crashes with either. Which is more
accurate -- gun A that never misses or gun B that never misses?
