I guess I should give some better answers, StarOffic was a knee-jerk
reaction since that's what I use.

There's a perl module that reads .xls files and more.
http://www.patoche.org/LTT/all/00000189.html Using perl you could
probably automate the process if you have to do it regularly. There
seems to be a perl module for just about everything. One day I'm gonna
find that perl module that answers SLUG list questions!

Xess 4.1 can read Excel 97 and 2000 spreadsheets and export in delimited
text.

Gnumeric can import and export Excel sheets.
