once the machine boots, execute:
dmesg | more
and make sure the drive shows up in the hardware detection. Run:
fdisk /dev/hd[?]
where [?] is replaced by the device letter assigned when you view the
dmesg output. (It should be something like hdb or hdc or hdd, assuming
it's IDE.)
partition, use mke2fs (or mkfs variation of your preference) and enjoy.
