Er, no. It's a fully ACID, mostly SQL92-compliant, multiuser
database.

The history of PostgreSQL is long, developed at UCB and other
educational institutions based on the BSD license. It has roots in
Ingres, which Computer Associates' products is based on. Late '80s
relational designs included commercial offsprings such as Oracle and
Informix (or Sybase?) if I remember correctly. A resurgence of
interest in Postgres in the early '90s led to the release of
Postgres95 and eventually a refocus to an ANSI SQL92 query approach
that has led to today's PostgreSQL.

Great Bridge was formed in May 2000 to provide commercial support
for the database. Unfortunately, they recently closed their doors,
unable to land major contracts. Fortunately, just months earlier,
RedHat decided to release its own database product which is based on
PostgreSQL, so commercial support is still available for those
company's interested. And OSS development of PostgreSQL under the
BSD license is not going to die of anytime soon.
