I see that there are a bunch of IRC client apps available - can anyone
recommend one in particular? I am looking for a simple interface and fairly
easy setup.

well.. now that you IRC.. check out #sunlug on irc.openprojects.org ..
It's our channel.. I'm almost always there.. tina hangs out sometimes..
and a couple other people show up.. there is also #linpeople and a couple
other linux help channels on that server..
