Mike, what happens if you just use cdrecord from a command line and do something
like

(with a CDRW disc)

cdrecord -v dev=1,1 speed=1 blank=fast

or do a dummy write on a CDR (it won't actually write to the disk)

cdrecord -v dev=1,1 speed=1 -dummy -pad -audio /somedir/*.somefiles
