If you look at the logs, he's clearly got an Intel PIIX4 southbridge
(i440LX/BX/GX).

Again, I suspect the Maxtor master and slave are fighting with each
other, or possibly the newer Maxtor keeps trying to force the
Ultra33 bus into Ultra100, which it doesn't support. He should at
least try running the Maxtor update66/100 utility to see if it fixes
things.
