That doesn't get rid of the data though. It will only get rid of the MBR on the master.

If you use the tool that is provided by the manufacturer to format the drive it won't destroy it. I have never in my 14+ years repairing computer equipment destroyed a drive by low level formatting it. (I used to do it all the time to re interleave old MFM drives, and or to remap bad sectors on IDE and SCSI drives) I would however recommend the dd over low-level, if you want the drive safe from recovery dd it at least 10 times.
