I would say that 80 to 85 % of all traffic seen at my ethernet
interface is
ARP requests, from the various 'gateways' ( 24.94.x.1, 65.32.x.1
usw)
to various discrete addresses. The replies are never seen. When I
got
my rr service a couple of years ago there were three /24 type
subnets
whose dot-ones were apparent on my connection. Today there are
thirteen,
an indirect indication of how much more congested the broadband
system
has become. Thus most of the receive traffic you see flashing the RD
light
is just ARP traffic. If you want to do long term analysis of your
connection
on the ethernet port, a useful option is to be able to *negate* any
ethertype
traffic 0x0806 that you see, the Klos Technologies "PacketView" is
one
inexpensive analyzer that permits this. Bob F
