Do you need Sendmail? If not, why not just prevent it from starting
up?

RedHat/some:
rm /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/*sendmail*
rm /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/*sendmail*

Others:
rm /etc/rc2.d/*sendmail*
rm /etc/rc3.d/*sendmail*
