[SLUG] funky NIC driver revision

dmesg provides the following

8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.15c loaded <== old kernel (2.4.3?) > home
lan worked

8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.19 <== new kernel (2.4.12) > home lan no
longer works

Okay ... the new kernel loads a new driver revision. Now my NIC is
non-functional (it still works if I boot to the old kernel). How can I
revert to the old NIC while keeping all else the same in the new kernel?
