Thanks Brian ... that looks like the ticket! I HAVE reference books here
but thumbing through them turned up nothing useful. You and Tim Wright are
two of the reasons I think Linux is going to succeed and gain acceptance
in mainstream computing.
There are two major impediments that I encounter in learning to use Linux.
The first is that I often do not know the name of the command I need. This
isn't specific to Linux ... it would apply to learning any OS. The second
is that I still sometimes "think Microsoft". That is, I use strategies
that were cobbled together to deal with their cobbled together OS's and
applications.
In the four hours since asking this question I have gotten a "first
approximation" answer that would have solved the problem in a round-about
way and also a very precise answer that exactly resolves the matter.
When I ask a Windows group a techie question I don't even check back for a
few days or a week. Even then, I am usually disappointed.
Linux has, thus far, been a better experience.
