Ya know, Bob ... I couldn't tell you WHAT I did. 
I did try the sync command recommended by Brian but no joy ... the dir 
listing is still there.
[root@a bill]# umount /dev/fd0
umount: /dev/fd0: not mounted
[root@a bill]# ls /mnt/floppy
New Directory/  index.html
No ... "New Directory" is NOT on this diskette.
I dunno ... maybe I am just tired.
Ahhh ... but wait! I dunno where that old listing came from ... but "$ 
mount /dev/fd0" followed by a "ls" brings up the _real_ listing. 
File that one under "unsolved mysteries". It's working. I dunno why. It's 
after 3 a.m. and I no longer care why. :-)
