    Well I don't use binary distributions, so I am not sure exactly how your
gnome behaves. You have basically two mainstream choices for desktop file
managers (this is what places the icons on the DT), either MC or Nautilus.
They are configured differently, but I do have another way that MAY be a
solution for you. After you have removed the icons in question, go to the
Foot Menu > Programs > Settings > Session menu, and select

Save Current Session

When you restart your gnome session, the icons should no longer appear.

Again, this really depends on your distribution and other factors. It does
work for me, but I compile my own binaries and so its not necessarily or
likely the same as your binaries. As well I use MC and have never used nor
liked Nautilus.
