Glen's "pappy" has a venerable Epson Sylus Color 600 that works fine under
lpr and even better under CUPS. I have always owned either Epson or
Panasonic printers (except for a really disastrous run in with a
StarMicronta 9 pin) and MUCH prefer the Epsons. I feel I have always
gotten very good service out of each machine. At the time I accidentally
trashed it during maintenance (don't ask ... it was 110% my fault), my
Epson LQ 850 had printed in the neighborhood of 40 cases of paper and was
still going strong. Not 40 reams ... 40 cases.

My wife has a Lexmark. As bad as the consumables on the Epson are, the
Lexmark is worse and the print quality is simply not acceptable for
anything more important than printing a web page for personal reference.

The Epson SC 600, on the other hand, still prints credible photoprints on
glossy paper and passes the moire part of the CUPS print test with flying
colors.

Note ... when considering a printer purchase you will need to weigh
several factors: speed, print quality, initial cost, consumable costs,
reliability and useability under Linux. I have found the Epson SC 600
suitable for my purposes but YMMV.
