I hope this question doesn't sound _too_ stupid:
I've been running memtest86 on my p133 for about a day and a half now.
There is a line on its interface that says
Test: 4
which I guess means that this is the fourth (repeat?) test it is
running...? Does memtest86 stop itself automatically or does it just
keep repeating the test until I tell it to stop?
* a note: the reason I'm running memtest:
A few weeks ago, I added 64M of EDO RAM to total 128. Sometimes
gkrellm and top reported that only ~30M were being used; other times
they would report that ~80+M were being used, even though I was running
the same processes.... and when I quit X, top would report that only
20M were free! The changes in reporting occurred whenever I shutdown &
restarted the next day. The programs I was running were: bash, X,
IceWM. Lately, all I run is ratpoison, which doesn't even take up a
meg of memory, and gkrellm reports that 50M are free (top reports that
only 20M are free!!! >:()
--Even if no one knows why this would be happening, can anyone tell me
what the typical load on memory is when they are running nothing** but
BASH? Or how about X/window manager?
** by "nothing," I except the stuff that the boot process starts up
typically, like sendmail, tty, etc.... (I used SuSE 7.2 and obviously
whatever that loads typically is what I am running when I am running
"nothing").
Thanks a lot for your time, folks.

P.S.: My apologies if the last of this letter seems familiar to anyone
that may have read it a few weeks ago..... for when I sent it at that
time, I wasn't s*bscr*bed except to the "slug-digest" because I thought
slug-digest showed ALL of the threads that went to the normal "slug"
list, so I never saw any replies. I apologize for the redundancy.
Another P.S.: why do we have to write "s*bscr*be if we are sending to
slug@nks.net, when majordomo@nks.net is the one that processes
commands?
Yet another P.S. (YAPS): why do people write "un*x"?
