first I'll post what I have :
Compudine 486 AMD-DX2-80 box
SMC 8216C (Ultra) ethernet card
Zeon 94VO card(floppy-HDD)
Trident serial card (mouse)
1.2 GiG WD Caviar HDD
now what I need :
another ISA ethernet card
and anything you have laying around that I may be able to use
now what I would like to do :
I am open to suggestions/alot of help. I want to set
this box in the other room at the
end of the 45 foot ethernet rj45 that will be running
from the linksys 4 port. In that room I want to power
the other 2 puters and have all the normal access
1. will the 486 work in this capacity?
2. anything special other than dhcp server have to be
be done---considering that the linksys is acting as a firewall also?
3. is this a suitable method to accomplish the end goal? (running
the 2 computers in the other room with full internet/mail)
4 best/easiest distro to handle the duties--I have SuSE 7.3
but would like to know if there is a "slimmer" distro that will
handle the above?
5. best wat to set the box---there is no monitor so will have to
controll/set it with one of the puters it will be serving---is that possible?
I do not even a remote knowledge in anything but very basic linux and
want to know if this is do-able by me--a novice?
replies off list are ok also---any help is appreciated
Thanks,
AJ
