Kris ... what sort of certifications? If you want to go "cheap", get
an A+ book and memorize it then plunk down a couple hundred bucks for
the exam. Sit for the exam and collect your certification. The reason
cert orgs don't let people sit for the exam online is because they
can't see who is actually at the keyboard.
