I know some of you have drooled over my empeg (car mp3 player) when I've
brought it to SLUg meetings, or to the expos we've done, so I thought
I'd let you know that Sonicblue has slashed the priced amazingly in
attempt to clear stock of empegs. The 10GB unit normally priced $899,
then dropped to $699 was slashed to $199. Alas, the 10GB units are out
of stock, but 20GB units are only $299 (from $899) and as of at least an
hour or so ago, still showing as in-stock. 30GB units are $399 (from
$1099) and 60GB units are $499 (from $1399).
Sonicblue, when they acquired Empeg Ltd., UK, totally buried the product
and ticked off a whole lot of loyal Empeg users. (They acquired the
company for the engineers and then buried the product they brought with
them.) Sonicblue loses boatloads on each one of these they sell - I
understand that the basic unit, sans hard drive, costs about $500 or so
to build, from the really high-end components they use, the labor for
building and Q&A'ing them, and overhead of bringing up the line to build
the circuit boards, then add the cost of the drive - it's essentially a
"fire sale" so I'd really love it if everyone told as many people who
might be interested as they could find, so that the whole stock went
out. The harder Sonicblue gets reamed for the treatment they gave to the
Empeg guys they bought out, and the users they've been screwing over,
the happier I'll be...
so there's an idea for those of you who don't get what they want this
holiday season, or for those who get money. :)
