This is on a debian system first of all.
I have recently started having problems with 'top'.
I would run 'top' and it would error out. I have 'strace'd it and here's
what is stuffed at the end:

I cleared out /var/run/utmp - reset the ownsership and permissions and
then login with ssh. Running top right after that again results in the
above problems. Anyone ever seen this before?
