You could also try using xwd :-)

xhost +localhost;sleep 5;xwd -display localhost:0 -root -out filename;

(off the top of my head, the syntax may be incorrect.)

Then you can xwdtopnm and pnmto whatever you want the image format to be
(provided the support is installed.)
