First the M$ crap is someone who is willing to share knowledge so you can
benifit.
Second. The results will vary depending on the software used.
Minicom is a good test to verify your hardware is connecting.
kppp from the desktop will let you choose pap or chap authentication in the
setup
previously someone responded that pap is used by your ISP.
if your using pppd, then the file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets will need to be
edited
like: userid * password *
additionally the file /etc/ppp/options is very important.
Find the answers in the manual pages for pppd
In the authentication section is a comment about the user options on the
command line for pppd.
