Sun and the Apache project are arguing over some support libraries that
the Apache project would like to see in the next "official" APIs from
Sun along with requirements that re-implementations of these libraries
should not be license-restricted. Of course Sun doesn't like that.

The JBoss group have a J2EE-compatible application engine, but Sun
doesn't want to license the official "J2EE" spec to non-commercial
entities who haven't paid Sun a big bag of money for the little sticker
to put on their boxes.

Two different issues and neither one of them is regarding a
reimplimentation of Java, which, the closest thing you could get would
be the Blackdown Java port which is kind of semi-officially sanctioned
by Sun in that the Blackdown guys have JDK source code and are allowed
to release it as a "Java JDK" as long as it passes the compatibility
test kit, which Sun has, errr, graciously provided
free-of-the-normal-ridiculous-cost to the Blackdown group. Then of
course Sun took the code that Blackdown generated and made some minor
tweaks and released it as the official Sun JDK port without mentioning
Blackdown in the initial press release...
