Do it that way and I'll give you forty lashes with a wet noodle. The
whole point of a thumbnail is to avoid downloading a 500k graphic until
you're sure it's what you want.
I'd suggest that you use your image editor of choice (The GIMP, for me)
to make thumbnails of a few dozen images. If you'd like to make
thumbnails of arbitrarily many images, seek a way to automate the
process.
