[SLUG] Pathing limits conundrum

Please note, if you want to have Adabas running with StarOffice 6.0 on
Mandrake 8.2, there is an issue you kight wish to take into account:

Adabas limits paths to a max length of 40 characters, including file
extension. StarOffice 6.0 does NOT do this. So, if you get a StarOffice
Install with Adabas installed within the StarOffice install to the
StarOffice path or you cannot open an Adabas source in StarOffice but
can run StarOffice, please rerun the StarOffice srtup and maintain the
install or uninstall Adabas and reload it in a short-pathed home (mine
now resides in /home/john/adabas) and limit your table names to short
names) this may not apply to the full adabas, and will let you all know
if it does not.

It ALSO appears that Adabas is using SYM-Links in the RC subseries of
KDE 3.0.1 AS PATHS. I cannot get it to run from KDE 3.0.1 RC (a set
grabbed May 3rd. I think RC 2) but it runs fine (same EXACT install run
in the same exact way from a link to app common to both KDEs) from KDE
3.0.1 as of 05\22\2002 MM\DD\YYYY. KDE.org has this new RPM set for
Mandrake, with some revised dependency files as of June 12, 2002 for
those who are having KDE 3.0.1 install problems in Mandrake 8.2 or app
quirkiness problems, and the fixes are to Libstdc and gcc RPMs, among
others.

SUN Microsystems 2nd level tech support, in email, did NOT tell me why
this was so, but since Adabas is intended to be backward compatible to
WIN95, that is probably why-- WIN95 original had flacky FAT32, it was
really released as WIN95 OSR releases and was not stable until after OSR
2.5- and long file naming greater than 40 chars was released with WIN98
and that file naming support also resulted in PATHING support limits
increasing. this limit allows pure cross-compatibibility at the
sacrifice of the longer file naming functionality in WINDOWS 98 and up
and in Linux and in Unix. I got Adabas 11 D on the StarOffice 6.0 CD,
for those interested.

Back to work, gonna see if can update one of my KDEs(I have RC and final
running as alternate boot choices, X ala MDK thinks final is KDE and RC
is KDE3-- go figure!!).

NB: This is being cross-posted as plain text to SLUG and LEAPlist only,
and given the complexity of the pathing issues, it is not going to
LEAP's APP-SIG but to the main list there. If LEAP or SLUG admin wishes
to cross-post to the APP-SIG lists, feel free. A copy of the email set I
got from SUN is available, but it is a non-reply box.

John.
