At this point neither nmbd nor smbd will run. They were listed as processes
on Friday after I added execute permission to rc.samba. nmbd and smbd have
rwx permissions for root. Rebooting this morning and they aren't in process
list, so:
Per Matt's instructions:
Ran smbd as root in full debug: /usr/sbin/smbd -d 10
/var/log/syslog has line: Jul 22 09:05:44 humphry inetd[74]: netbios-ns/udp
server failing (looping), service terminated
Ran nmbd as root in full debug as well - get exactly the same entry in
syslog
Complete search of drive yeilds no smbd.log file
/etc/inetd.conf has rw- permissions for root
I'm stumped. Many thanks for any help.

As root run smbd in full debug:
# /usr/sbin/smbd -d 10
Check your samba logs -- possibly in /var/log/samba -- and syslog in
/var/log:
# tail -f /var/log/samba/smbd.log
# tail -f /var/log/syslog
