I've two annoying problems with my printer. It's a network connected hp4v ("
l a s e r ")with 8.5x11 in first tray and 11x17 in an additional tray.
hp4ff is mapped to it's ip number in hosts and has printed on occasion so I
can talk to it - just not very well. Here are the symptoms:

1) frequently, when I try to print I get a "paper jam" error on the printers
led panel

2) on occasions when it does print it uses 11x17 in spite of the kde laser
jet control panel setting of "letter"

My current printcap appears below:

# APS1_BEGIN:printer1
# - don't delete start label for apsfilter printer1
# - no other printer defines between BEGIN and END LABEL
lp|Printer1 auto:\
    :lp=:\
    :rm=hp4ff:\
    :rp=raw:\
    :if=/etc/apsfilter/basedir/bin/apsfilter:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
    :lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp/log:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\
    :mx#0:\
    :sh:
raw1|Printer1 raw:\
    :lp=:\
    :rm=hp4ff:\
    :rp=raw:\
    :if=/etc/apsfilter/basedir/bin/apsfilter:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/raw1:\
    :lf=/var/spool/lpd/raw1/log:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/raw1/acct:\
    :mx#0:\
# :sf:\
# :sh:
# APS1_END - don't delete this

Thank you, thank you and thank you for any ideas as to the resolution.
