In addition to all else that has been said If you are running RedHat or
Mandrake you probably have a few shell scripts in your /usr/bin
directory that launch kaffe when you execute java or javac. These will
need to be moved or renamed to avoid running kaffe. Kafffe is a GPLed
java version that does a fair job of emulating java 1.1 which
unfortunately is not compatible with byte code produced with jre 1.4.
 That might also explain the errors you are getting. I love the way Sun
supports backward compatibility (not).
