The default printer daemon in RH is lprng. lpd is the acronym for line
printer daemon. cups is another lpd and takes up more disk space than does
lprng. Also, cups requires the lpr libraries as a dependency. lprng was a
complete rewrite of lpr. which is better? I don't know.
