The drive was indeed unpowered and had no tape but in my haste I thought I
saw it mount - I was wrong - it didn't.

mt -f /dev/st0 status still returns "no such device"

a re-issue of dmesg and search for "tape" in the output still yeilds nothing

Is it possible my kernel wasn't configured to support a scsi tape?
