[SLUG] Tivo and Saving to Tape

Tivo-ers:

I record a lot of shows for play later on Tivo, set to medium quality.
Occasionally, I want to save something to tape. But the quality is
_horrible_ (virtually unwatchable) even on new tapes. I've cleaned my
tape heads. Anyone else seen this before, and is this a function of some
encoding done by the networks or Tivo, or should I invest in a new VCR?
