[SLUG] Upgrade Woes

The only distro I have not had any problems with upgrading was Corel's
distro when they had that out.
all you had to do was put in the new cd at boot up and when it starts to
boot it will ask upgrade you would click on yes and then it would say hold
on then it would ask what you wanted upgraded all or custom if you choose
all it would then run and take about 18 to 20 minutes then when you reboot
it comes up and runs fine.

How ever though with all Os's when you upgrade you may end up with a
corrupted or something not configured properly and when you upgrade you then
usually end up with a total disaster. The problems I see with upgrades is
that there is nothing to verify that the packages and Os is indeed ready to
upgrade, or to have it catch missing pieces needed and then the ability to
fix damaged files first before upgrading.

How ever in most situations it is usually best to do a clean install. back
the ole data up install the new os then copy the data back over with clean
programs and packages.

Also with Os's especially the Novell OS they have these nice little service
packs you have to install and if you miss say sp2 and got to sp4 you will
then experience a total disaster. You have to install each one and in order
pr you can spend days with their tech support then they will tell you that
you will have to go to a backup that has the previous sp or they can not
help you and in most cases can not diagnose this problem for days and
hundreds of dollars in calls.
