Not to start a religious war, but there's also PostgreSQL. It has front
ends
that will run from both Windows and from Linux (though they are
different
programs). They both ultimately connect to the back end server.
Another consideration is exactly what are you replacing? Access has some
nice
features, and you can do lots of cool stuff with VB. But if it's too
expensive, and still acts like a toy, then you move away from Access,
and go
web. :-)
