I had a strange thing happen to me the other day with my modem. I did find a way to fix it but I
don't like the solution. I am using RH8 with a USR 56k hardware modem.
This is what it did. I using the network device control, dialed out using the ppp0. The modem
connected and did most of the tones and never received the ending tone. Then the automated voice
came on the line. Now during all of this, the network device control pannel told me that I was
activated or connected. I was not. When I click the deactivate button the PC still thought that
it was connected. I tried to reset by disconnecting the phone line from the wall. Got noghting.
This is good. Then connected the phone line back in and got a dial tone but could not dial out.
As far as I could tell, the modem still thought that it was connected. I was still not able to
dial out. It seamed as though the modem would not release the line. I logout thinking that would
clear things up, but still the same. So, I rebooted the PC. That worked.
So, how do I fixs this the easy way?
