Maybe I didn't explain this well enough. I'll try again.

After booting up RedHat and BEFORE running X. I can use the mouse to
high lite text on the screen and paste it to the command line. I can't
do this in Debian and I use this feature a lot when I'm working in
terminal mode and not in X.

The mouse works fine in X. But I don't always run X.
