If this is for a desktop system, the low end Nvidia cards are dirt
cheap, and the drivers from Nvidia, while binary only, are quite good.

The RagePro DRI drivers work, I've got them running on a two year old
laptop with one of the early ATI mobility chipset (rage pro equivalent),
there are no unexpected problems with the xscreensaver gl hacks, and GL
apps don't seem to cooperate with the LCD (lots of flicker, none using an
external monitor).
