Mandrake, RH and SuSe will reposition a MS XP drive with OUT use of Partition
Magic and do an excelent job.

Partition Magic's latest version doedNOT work well with XP.
I know.
I have it.
I tried it.
So you wind up making a partition for linux with Partition Magic and then
repartipitioning with Mandrake, SuSE, RH.
Big pain in the ass.

If you are using some distribution besides RH, SuSE or Mandrake I have no
knowledge of the issues involved.

One word of caution you can partition a drive with SuSE or RH and install
either.
If you don't like one you can then install the other.

But! If you install Mandrake you can not go back to RH or SuSE without
repositioning the HD.

Personally I have Mandrake installed on this Thinkpad because
1. most of the people on the Thinkpad list use Mandrake
and
2. because I hate the Bluecurve which you could not get rid of in the RH
version I had when the Bluecurve came out.
