The knoppix security tools distribution--
For those of you who have been awe'd by knoppix, here is another to add to
your collection. rarely is there an ISO that graces my computer that gets a
second look. Knoppix impressed me. It still does. Its also fair to mention
the splenderous morphix CD's. the gaming cd is just such a delight. But
then just when i thought i couldn't hold close any more flavors of knoppix,
i got an STD. lol
Its use is clear. It is rigged for security and information gathering on a
network. I almost felt big brother gasp in horror when i booted it for the
first time. It is seemingly the perfect gift for the aspiring script kiddie
learning how to annoy us all with a new toy, or sys admins and home network
owners alike. It has the standard knoppix gifts, hardware detection, easy
to configure, no HD needed, runs KDE 3.1 mozilla browser, 2.4.20 kernel,
etc etc. It also has in it several editions geared for network and security.
the kde menu task bar has the editions clearly visible. Instead of naming
specific software, i'll just list the "categories" the task menu has, and
perhaps you'll get the picture. Authentication, Encryption, Forensics,
Firewall, Honeypots, IDS, Network Utils, Penetration tools (hmmm what could
this have in it >:) Vulnerability assessment, packet sniffers, servers and
wireless tools. Basically if you're a netadmin, you'll want this STD.
you can test your network (or home computers...). and If you just want to
learn about this stuff, the menu items come complete with "RTFM" manuals for
your reading pleasure. It can be a great tool, and a great way to learn or
get back up to date with security... even for the GNU/LInux deficient! So,
if you're one that passes knoppix cd's to all your friends to show them how
cool your OS is, pass around the STD to all your ethically questionable
friends.. and/or sysadmin friends. (that is.. if sysadmins have friends.
lol) They will thank you for giving them STD. I think we all need an STD
for our own. haha ok enough of that.. sorry folks.
here are the useful links again....
http://www.knoppix-std.org/tools.html - has a list of the tools
http://www.knoppix-std.org/download.html - uhh this is where you can
download it from.
and if that isnt enough, you may also wish to check out australia's
prevailing LiveCD, "ADIOS" it has a similar concept, but redhat 8 based,
and comes with LIDS.(Linux Intrusion Detection) and usermodelinux
utilities...
Its very much worth a burn.
GNU/Linux is really starting to show the world its versatility and power.
all haiL OpenSource! muuaaaaaa haaaa haaaa haaaaaa!!!!
