In defense of craftsmen, I'll tell you the story of my uncle. He was
design draftsman for Dow Chemical in Houston for decades. Finally he
decided to retire, and purchased a plot of land in Arkansas, to where he
and my aunt retired. He decided to make knives to keep himself busy.
Very expensive, custom-order knives. Apparently, he's done well for
himself, and can't keep up with the orders.

Never give up on craftsmanship. There is always a demand for it. You
just have to find it (the tricky part).

One other point about craftsmanship. In some areas (perhaps
boat-building), there just aren't that many people who know how to
actually do the work. And when the last guy dies without passing it on,
there will be no one left who knows how to do it. A great loss.
