There's been a lot of bashing of the Ximian desktop on this thread. I've
installed it a few times, mainly on systems I've built/configured for
other people. In those cases, I tend to use it instead of the "vanilla"
gnome installation because it seems a tad more polished, and also because
I was setting up those folks with evolution and red carpet anyway. It
really does work smoothly assuming a few things - the main one being: you
don't mix it with other versions of gnome - ximian wants to be the only
gnome install, or at least the only one in its file tree (you could get
away with ximian in /opt and stock gnome in /usr probably).
Notwithstanding this, it is a solid desktop (although personally, you'll
never pry me away from enlightenment and afterstep).
