Well...hmmm...smtpauth.earthlink.net will allow you to access your
earthlink/mindspring email across networks. RR's network won't allow smtp
traffic not belonging to it to go across (and neither will verizon)...but
smtpauth will go. So, for my mail server outbound, I use smtpauth.

Where do I put this information? Well, in KDE 3.1, kmail 1.5.3, there's a spot
to add it. There's even a box that you can check that says, "Server requires
authentication." I also believe that Mozilla Mail can allow for this, but it
doesn't allow you to encrypt passwords or other mail traffic (it may, but as
of version 1.0, it doesn't).

Just For Fun (TM), I set up my smtpauth system using exim, since when I did
all of this, I was running kde 2.2, with kmail's version that didn't have
this feature yet. I learned alot when I did it, but I've now forgotten it all
since it's been more than a year... :-)
