[SLUG] distribution choice

Hi people. I have a free partition on my drive (54GB out of 120GB
unused), and I need to install a MIDI-writing program (and all of them
I've found require KDE, which I don't have), so I figured (since I have to
do extensive renovation anyhow and it's been so long since I reinstalled)
I'd install a new distribution into that spare partition over, and migrate
things over from my mostly-working mostly-RedHat-7.2 existing setup.

The only major question in my mind is, which distribution should I use?
I should use a journaling filesystem, as we get unexpected power outages
here (and my UPS is temporarily back on RMA). I've heard XFS is in
several ways better than ext3 and ReiserFS, so I'm leaning toward XFS.
I'm not afraid of compiling things from source if need be. I have SuSe
8.1 (commercial), Gentoo 1.4 (downloadable) and RedHat 8 (downloadable),
and I can downloand and burn others.

I started off with Slackware back around kernel 1.2.12, but since then
I've always used Slackware. I'm not one for eye candy; if I can get away
with installing just the KDE headers and using FVWM, I'm happier.

Should I stay with RedHat (popular, familiar) or has somebody used KDE on
a different distribution?
