Maybe political in its source, but otherwise, technical :-)

Well...that's what makes it technical! :-)

Someone already mentioned the HURD. If not for linus, that's where GNU would
be, and was before. Be OS is truly cool. I've downloaded it for the x86
platform and played with it, and have an actual disk for putting in on the
first generation powerpc machines, such as the ones that Bill Preece has. Be
OS is buzz-word compliant: multi-tasking, multi-threaded, etc...check out
www.beincorporated.com, as www.be.com no longer exists. I believe that 3com
bought the Be Operating System, and have mothballed it. There was a petition
to release the source code, but that was a failure...

Now...back to the political question: while there is some technical ability to
change the kernels, there is a certain type of openness on the part of Linux
that *BSD doesn't have. That's been my wonder at why Linux gets the buzz,
when in reality (especially in the past) the *BSD kernel is better for
various reasons. I don't think that Linus could just pick up and start
working on a *BSD kernel if SCO should (by some major stretch of the
imagination) win, and it have the same buzz...there's an entire developmental
philosophy behind Linux which is different from *BSD, and that's really part
of what is at stake with the SCO lawsuit. Linux is just a lightning rod.
