I have a similar situation in a sun solaris OS running on a sun hardware workstation.
It used to be really slow if, I loggen on after a long time. Because the machine, used to go to sleep,
if it was idle for a while...
I deactivated the power management setting on the machine..
Since I used a solaris OS the commands will not be applicable in linux.

My suggestion is to look for the command in this way.

man -k power

hopefully this will lead you in the right direction....

all the best.
Let me know if this works for you...
