It should work; that's exactly how my optical mouse is set up on my desktop
(USB with an included PS2 adapter to the PS2 port).

If you just plug the mouse into the ps2 port (with the adapter), does it
work? You should be able to get basic functionality, then play with
mousedrake to fine tune the settings.
