in my original post you can see that I was logging into the server using
smbclient and that persons username/password. it failed. Therefore it has to
be a server problem. both boxes involved are win2k BTW.

Maybe it's a password encrypted vs. plain-text password problem. Can you
try logging in the affected users from a different machine? Or are they on
the sole XP and 98 boxes? Also, I forget... how long has this problem been
going on?
