Have you looked at Replay TV? I know they don't have the brand
recognition of TiVo, but they seem very nice. They cost a bit more
upfront but that includes the service for 3 years and after 3 years the
service is $0.99 a month. They also have some networking capabilities,
and since this is for "the folks" the added convenience of a little
black box that just works might be worth it.
But of course that's not as fun as building your own :-)
