This sounds more like a hardware problem. Perhaps it is time to replace the power supply.

Subject: [SLUG] Like winblows 98 problem

I have a M$ problem, (with LINUX): just after I install a new
version of Slackware, when I issue a halt command the process
ends with the ATX power supply powering down. After 3 or 4
days it doesn't power down. If I press the <power> button
it doesn't turn the power supply off, I must press <reset>
wait for the beep and press the <power> button to power it down.
Am I alone with this problem?
Is there a fix or a better work around?
